This early sword comes in koshirai and is in a fine polish.  The work on this sword is very elegant.  In the hamon you can see tsunagashi and kinsuji with a well defined habuchi with some ko-nie to frost the top.  The hada is well forged and in good shape for such an old sword with longish wavy masame running here and there entwined with itame and mokume. Ji-nie appears.  The style is that of shinogi-zukuri  with bohi carved. The tang is suriage and may be koto or Shinto. Niju-ba appears in the boshi and the sword has an old Yamato feel to it.

The koshirai is well made and functional with speckled lacquer of gold. The menuki are of roosters:

The Rooster symbol can be found in many cultures of Asia but it happens to be most venerated in Japan. For the Japanese people the rooster is a sacred animal. Therefore it is allowed to roam freely and even enters the Shinto Temples where it is believed according to the Japanese tradition that the rooster gives the morning call to the goddesses Amaterasu.
The Rooster is meant to exemplify a number of virtues. The comb symbolizes civil merit whereas the spurs are taken as military merit. The fighting ability of the rooster makes it a symbol of courage whereas its cocking gives it the representation of reliability.

The tsuba and kodzuka represent Dragon in waves or clouds motif. The fuchi kashira are very nice quality of a flower and leaf motif with gold finishes. An off white tsuka ito and sageo delightfully contrasts with the gold suspended lacquer finish of the saya.  This blade should be submitted to shinsa in the future.
