A BEAUTIFULLY MOUNTED KOTO PERIOD KATANA WITH STRIKING ACTIVITY!!!
This katana is a wonderfully constructed blade which is elegantly shaped with a beautiful balance. This sword though O-suriage still retains its high quality construction for its age.
To begin with, the sword is light and elegant and is mounted with a beautiful Motif of Birds and the Sea. the Fuchi / Kashira are a delicately carved Shakudo of Sea birds frolicking in and above the ocean waves. The Tsuba is iron and most likely from the momoyama period. It is of the same Motif of Birds flying and frolicking in the Ocean. The Tsuka and Saya are finished in a matching black lacquer and ito. The braided black and cream sageo is of a high quality braiding.
The sword still retains the deep curvature and elegance of its original sugata. Once a much longer sword these blades were sometimes shortened to the Uchikatana style and size due to the one handed style that was in vogue during the latter portion of the Koto period. The Jitetsu is of a beautiful tight itame mokume mix and utsuri appears. Ji-nie abounds in the hada and causes the blade to have a moistness to the finish. this is found in the best of old swords. The hamon is a subtle variety of notare with gunome mix which gives one the feel of gently rolling waves. there is a misty nioi with ko-nie that reflects off the surface of the hamon. The Kissaki is longish and of a midare komi finish. The quality of the steel will provide hours of enjoyment and study.
