A interesting Osoraku-Zukiri tanto, this sword is bound to please many. The Shimada smith Sukemune who lived in Suruga province in the mid-fifteenth century is said to have made the 1st Osoraku-zukiri tanto. This name was said to come from a famous tanto forged by the Shimada smith for the Daimyo Katagiri Katsumoto. It was engraved with the Shimada syllables O So Ra Ku meaning Perhaps on the blade. This shape became very popular during the Shinshinto period of which this sword was produced.
This elegantly made Tanto comes in a very nice older polish. The hamon is an erratic blend of gunome temper with much hataraki. The blade is from the Shinshinto era prior to the 19th century. The hada is an itame. This Tanto shows off the swords fine qualities such as this. The blade is unsigned and has the Osaraku-ZUKURI shape.
The koshirae is of a wonderful lacquered set. The saya is a mix of a beautiful glossy red lacquer with beautiful matching lacquered fittings and appears to be from the late Edo period. The tsuka has a wonderful original polished lacquered same (rayskin) with an orchid and white braided sageo.
