Mihara was located in Bingo province. The Bingo Mihara school is thought to have its roots in the pre-koto period. The founder is considered to be Mihara Masaie who worked around Enbun (1356). Smiths of this group are Sukekuni of Ichimonji, Chikatsugu, Kaneyasu, Takamitsu, and Kaneshige. These smiths are generally considered as Ko-Mihara. Keep in mind that Ko means old so ko mihara refers to an older style of workmanship. A style of workmanship that was lost in later generations. Mihara work was born of Yamato with influence from neighboring Aoe. So in these swords we can see many Yamato style features with some Yamashiro mixed in as well as some influence of Bizen school. The Mihara school smiths who were active from the end of the Kamakura period through the Nambokucho period (1336-1392) were considered the ko-mihara school.
This fine blade comes with highly desirable tokubetsu hozon paper attesting to the quality and importance of this sword. Many ko mihara blades have received juyo level papers. The work on this sword is clearly of great quality. The hada and hamon have a yamato feel. The hamon has many hataraki and is nie deki mixed with some nioi. The sword comes with elaborate koshirai and a very good quality lacquered saya that is in overall good shape for its age. It comes in original mounts and with tokubetsu papers attesting to the quality and school of production.
