This is a very unusual military koshirai.  It was obviously custom made for an officer and still even has the original tassel.  These mounts are are one of a kind and truly a gem for a collector that understand the significance of this fine WWII mounts.  It may be possible with more research to even trace this sword back to its original lineage.  Under the habaki you can find kanji that also should be researched more.  Please look at the pictures carefully to see all these details.  The owner of this sword is interested in finding a proper home for this sword.  We feel that this sword with these mounts stands out historically and can not be judged as just another sword in WWII koshirai.  The blade and tsuba are much older than the mounts.  It was common for officers that came from samurai lineage to have an ancestral blade mounted in military mounts, to take with them to modern warfare.  This sword also has an older tsuba that adds to the uniqueness overall of this fine katana.  The blade is of good quality and is in a good old polish.  The hamon is very active but hard to photographed and looks better in hand.  If this sword is to be re-polished we would recommend that extra care be placed on the kanji under the habaki.  We strongly feel that it should not be removed as it adds to this swords history.  We would even venture to say that this blade is a museum quality item from WWII.
