A tanto like this naginata style is rare to see and in very nice condition. This shape was quite often seen from the earliest periods up until the the modern era. Mostly found in a larger size this tanto is an extremely rare version of the naginata style.

This rarely made Tanto comes in a very nice older polish. The hamon is an erratic blend of gunome-midare  with much togare-ba. The blade was  made in the owari/bizen style probably from the shinto era prior to the 19th century. The hada is a ko- itame. This Tanto  shows off the swords fine uniqueness. The blade is signed and papered as meikan more which means it was not found in the meikan. It reads Bishu Ju Kanetomo.

The koshirae is of a quality lacquered saya with strirated design. The saya  is a mix of a beautiful glossy black and brown striped lacquer and appears to be from the late Edo period. This package is a standout. The tsuka has a brilliant brown ito. The menuki are a fine quality gold with shakudo of ancient noi mask design. The fuchi kashira are a fine quality shakudo with ONI relief on the kashira. There is a fine quality kodzuka of rope and an iron tsuba with beautiful cutout relief work. There is naginata hi on both sides of the blade.
