This katana is from the koto era (around 1400's) and is a good quality sword with a very good shape and style.  The signature is difficult to decipher and appears to read "Ari( something )".  More than likely this is a non listed swordsmith.  Many smiths were unlisted if that worked in small towns or if they died young and not many swords were made.  It is clear however that the blade is very early and we dated it back to the 1400's at least.  The hada has some minor coarseness in places, overall it is tightly forger and is well made.  The hamon is active and has good hataraki/activity.  For such a old sword that obviously has been used the condition is very good.  It is extremely well balance and more than likely was meant to be used with one hand like a kodachi.  The hori is in the Bo-hi style and well cut.  The mounts have been restored and are in good condition.  All the fittings are antique and add to the overall look of this sword.  This early blade is very sound for its age and is in a good older polish.
