Katana – Edo Period (fss-970)

Katana – Edo Period (Unsigned, Possible Mino Tradition)

This is a fine mumei (unsigned) katana dating to the Edo period, forged in the traditional shinogi-zukuri style with a gentle curvature (sori 9.0 mm) and graceful proportion. Measuring 28 inches in length, the blade has a strong yet refined profile—30.0 mm wide at the base, tapering to 19.0 mm at the yokote—with a thickness of 7.2 mm at the mune-machi, giving it both presence and balance.

The hada is a well-forged combination of itame and mokume, displaying a flowing wood-grain texture with good activity. The hamon is an active midare-gunome with clove-shaped undulations and hataraki that suggest the hand of a skilled craftsman. The boshi is maru, neatly rounded and consistent. The nakago is suri-agae, indicating that the blade was shortened at some point in its life, a common practice for older swords that continued in service over generations.

Possible School

Although unsigned, the workmanship points toward the Mino tradition, and more specifically the Kanefusa line of smiths from Gifu Province. Their works are well known for midare-gunome temper lines over a vibrant itame/mokumehada. Certain elements may also reflect Edo-period Bizen influence, where elegant curvature and active hamon were favored.

Condition & Polishing Recommendation

The blade is presently in an older polish. There are no fatal flaws or structural concerns noted. The surface, while presentable, does not yet reveal the full beauty of the steel. Given the healthy condition of the ji and ha, a fresh professional polish is recommended to fully bring out the hada, enhance the clarity of the hamon, and restore the sword’s aesthetic presence. When combined with a new shirasaya and properly fitted habaki, this sword has the potential to become an excellent centerpiece in a collection.
