MINAMOTO KANENORI (fss-962)

This Tanto was made by Kanenori at the age of 86. Born in Daiane, Hoki Provence in in 1830 (Tenpo 1). He was originally named Miyamoto Shigahiko. He later apprenticed under Yokoyama Sukenage, from whom he learned his craft.  He received the character “Kane” from his master Sukenaga and began signing his works as Kanenori. After the Haitorei Edict in 1871 (Meiji 4), which led to a sharp decline in sword production opportunities. He returned to Kurayoshi and endured a difficult period by forging agricultural tools and kitchen knives. However, he received recognition from Emperor Meiji for his work on the sacred treasures of Ise Shrine. As a result of the recognition, in April 1907 (Meiji 39), he was appointed as Teishitsu Gigeiin along side Gassan Sadakazu (First Generation), and he produced many works, primarily tanto. He passed away on October 24, 1926 (Taisho 15) at the age of 97.

This Tanto has some outstanding history of the smith and the turbulent era of the Haitorei Edict in 1871. It comes with NBTHK Hozon Token Papers. It also comes in shirasaya with a wooden Habaki.  We would strongly recommend the new owner to polish this interesting piece of history made by Kanenori.
