This beautiful sword has great potential. The sword is signed Yasutsugu oite echizen saku kore. From our research we cannot confirm the signature to be correct and think that it is possibly a Gimei or false signature. It would have to be sent to shinsa to verify if the signature is correct or not. We are pricing this blade as an unsigned sword and providing information that we feel is correct. The blade does have Echizen qualities and appears to be of the Echizen school. A good quality sword with no flaws that are visible and should polish out very nicely without any problems. There is the Echizen Hollyhock seal on the tang as well. If this sword passes shinsa as a correct signature then it would increase the value immensely. The potential is there but we cannot guarantee the signature. We would prefer to be cautious in our judgment of this signature in fairness to the future owner. Regardless, this is still a sword from the Edo era possibly around the 1600’s-1700’s. It has some very nice work in the hada and the hamon. The hada is a nicely worked itame and the hamon is midare with kinsuji, sunagashi. There is ara-ni and ji-nie as well. The boshi is maru with fine workings within. If polished it will be stunning. If the signature turns out not be authentic there are several options to consider: restore and mount the blade and the signature can be removed at this time. It will then receive a certificate if it is unsigned and in essence would give the owner a good wakazashi in mounts with papers to enjoy and appreciate.
