This is a Shinshinto-period tanto showing workmanship in the style of the Kaga school. The blade is mumei (unsigned) and has an 8-7/8 inch cutting edge with a straight, well-balanced form.
The hada is a fine itame–mokume mix, and the hamon is an active midare-gunome, ending in a maru-boshi. The blade is ubu, retaining its original tang, and remains in an older but presentable polish that reveals good activity throughout.
It is mounted in an attractive lacquered Edo-period koshirae, decorated with gold mon throughout, giving it an elegant and distinguished appearance. The lacquer work is well preserved, showing fine detail and craftsmanship that enhances the overall presentation of the piece.
Overall, this is a well-forged Kaga-school tanto from the Shinshinto period, mounted in a beautiful gold-mon lacquered koshirae—an elegant and genuine example of late Edo artistry and refinement.
