Description:
This is an authentic gendaitō — a Japanese “modern sword” dating to the Showa period (World War II era). The term gendaitō (現代刀) literally means “modern sword” and in nihonto classification refers to swords made after the Haitōrei edict of 1876 up to the end of WWII. These blades bridge traditional smithing heritage with the late-period martial context of early 20th-century Japan.
While swords of this era are often seen in connection with the military buildup leading to and during WWII, gendaitōblades that exhibit visible hada (grain) and hamon (temper line) reflect a more traditional forging approach compared to mass-produced “guntō” blades and are sought after by collectors who appreciate 20th-century nihonto made in the classical manner.
This blade combines functional design with aesthetic nuances — such as an active temper line and clearly defined grain — that demonstrate it was more than just a utilitarian wartime weapon. Its generous 26″ nagasa and traditional form make it a compelling example of WWII-era sword craftsmanship.
Notes for Collectors:
Although blades from this period range widely in quality, those exhibiting traditional features (hada, hamon) are often categorized as true gendaitō by collectors and enthusiasts of modern nihonto, distinguishing them from purely factory-made “guntō” or Showa-era pieces lacking artisanal characteristics.
