This sword, attributed to Den Chōgi (Nagayoshi), carries a rich legacy. Chōgi is traditionally regarded among the “Juttetsu,” the ten esteemed disciples of Masamune, and his work exemplifies the Sō-Bizen style—a masterful fusion of Sōshū and Bizen traditions. While some debate the direct teacher-student link, Chōgi’s craftsmanship undoubtedly reflects Masamune’s influence. This blade, now ō-suriage (shortened in antiquity), remains a testament to that legacy.
Adding to its significance, this sword was designated Jūyō Tōken at the 16th session in 1967. Moreover, it bears a sayagaki by Kanzan (Dr. Honma Junji), a highly respected authority in sword appraisal. Kanzan’s inscription attests to the blade’s quality—praising its healthy steel and appropriate workmanship.
Together, these elements—Chōgi’s artistry, Jūyō designation, and Kanzan’s endorsement—make this sword a rare and historically anchored treasure.
