Sagami No Munekuni (fss-884)

His real name was Yamamoto Tougo, his initial smith name was Hiroshige who had belonged to Shitahara school in Bushu province. He learned the true 15 fold technique with his younger brother Musashi Taro YASUKUNI from their master Omura Kaboku who had served exclusively for Echigo Matsudaira clan and then in his later period served for a Tokugawa Mitsukuni as a medical doctor. It is well-known that Omura kaboku made swords as his pastime and Yamamoto Tougo had offered a Tachi to Tokugawa Mitsukuni who had granted the smith name of MUNEKUNI. This wakizashi is well-proportioned and with high shinogi-suji. The entire blade is quite dignified and finely forged. It is a wonderful example of Munekuni and is to signed proudly [The True 15 Folds Technique] in the reversed side. This is surely a unique work of MUNEKUNI, and it is also a  beautifully mounted wakizashi fully restored and polished.

The hada of this blade is spectacular. It is a combination of mokume and itame-nagare. Hataraki abounds in this blade Chikei, ji-nie can be seen throughout. There is kinsugi and ko-nie all over as well as some tsunagashi in areas. The blade is Ubu with one mekugi-ana.

A beautiful koshirae adorns this beautiful sword. The motif is of birds. The fuchi kashira are of 3 birds on a Nanako background in pristine condition. The menuki are birds of brass and the tsuba are birds on shakudo waves with gold dots.. The tsuka is a brown silk ito over a black same ( rayskin ) to match the black lacquered saya. The sageo is brown to match the brown tsuka Ito with tsunagi to display. The sword is mounted in shirasaya in a beautiful sashikomi polish. There is a kodzuka of birds to match.
