Settsu Hiromasa (fss-989)

This sword, signed Nishimura Settsu no Kami Minamoto Hiromasa, dates to the Tenna era (1681–1688). He is listed as Hiroyasu in the Meikan (Settsu-jū Fujiwara Hiroyasu) and also known as “Settsu-sa.” He initially signed as Hiroyasu, then as Hiromasa. The mei is authentic. While the Meikan lists one character for “Masa,” this blade reveals he used a different character, giving us a unique insight into his evolving signature. Importantly, it reflects his family name, Nishimura. The blade is just under 27.5 inches, with a sori of 15.0 mm, a hamachi width of 31.9 mm, and a thickness of 6.9 mm. In good polish, it showcases an attractive itame-hada, beautiful ji-nie, and a dynamic gunome-midare hamon. The antique tsuba and menuki contrast with modern fuchi/kashira, and the leather-wrapped handle hints at prior iaito use. Altogether, this piece blends historical evolution, craftsmanship, and collector appeal.
