This blade was forged by one of Shimosaka swordsmiths in the early Edo period.
The founder of Shimosaka school was the first-generation Yasutsugu. It was initially founded in Shimosaka town in Shiga prefecture at the end of the Muromachi period. During the early Edo period, Yuki Hideyasu, the second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, arranged a place in Kitanosho castle town in Echizen for Yasutsugu and his apprentices to move there to organize this school.
Echizen Province was famous for forging razor-sharp, practically-designed swords. The Edo government, run by the Tokugawa clan, ordered many blades from the swordsmiths in this province during the Edo period(1603-1868). There were so many swordsmiths originally from the Mino province(Gifu prefecture) in Echizen province, which is known as one of the five great Japanese sword styles MINO-DEN.
This blade is in Shobu-zukuri with Iori-mune. A Wakizashi. The thickness of the kasane is average. It is wide at the on base with of a less degree of tapering from the base to the extended point of the Kissaki with an average sori. The entire blade is full of heroic and powerful impression which was spread during kanei period.
Forging pattern (kitae hada) : The hada is Itame mixing with Mokume. The entire ji is sparkling and vividly crystallized with ji-nie of twinkling granules.
The Hamon is finely crystallized with tight Nie based suguha with composite lines of kinsuji and long lines of Nie of “Sunagashi”that cab be seen in it.
The Boshi forms a suguha-cho, a wide straight outline with hakikake lines of Nie activity then a regularly medium circle turns back deeply.
The Tang (Nakago) is UBU original kurijiri with seems Katte-sagari filemarks. A kurijiri chestnut shape. Back ridge is flat with slanting left filemark with one Mekugi-ana peg hole.
